Reconnect the boat battery to the boat wiring system. My boat tach started showing rpms way higher than it should and i could tell the motor wasnt actually turning that high.

The tachometer on one engine is jumping all around the place 300 4000 rpm without any change in actual engine speed. So if the tach is good then the jumping or bounce is being caused from the distributor cap to the tachometer. No specific reading using a smartcraft reading tool is showing. Turn on the boat and check if the tachometer receives a reading of revolutions per minute from the engine wiring.

Jason marine mechanic replied 5 years ago more than likely what it is it corrosion in the wiring behind the gauge. Also that engine seem to get too much gas smoke quite bad at idle speed. I put my msd box and my auto meter tach and speedo in and mine kinda does the same thing. Also at about 3000 rpm it will jump around 500 1000 rpms. When first started the needle jumps about 2000 rpms and then goes away when it warms up a bit. Recently i have notced that my tachometer jumps around erratically.
